FOR YOUR MIND  It is said that you cannot have an adult experience of life until you have an adult understanding of "God." The more I minister, the more I see the wisdom in this. In Religious Science we advocate for an adult understanding of the word "God." In this book, the author Jim Marion says that God isn't dead but maybe out conception of God is..or should be. If you are interested in consciousness and growth, this is a wonderfully interesting read.

Our philosophy, outlook and practice is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Ernest Holmes. Our basic textbook is "The Science of Mind" by Dr. Holmes.
Our founding pastor was Dr. David J. Walker. We honor his legacy by adhering to the essence of the Science of Mind teachings and by treating to know "that the innermost God and the highest God are one and the same."

What Inspires Me
 I get sentimental around holidays and I'm OK with that. Thanksgiving and The 4th of July are, perhaps, my favorite. As we prepare for our big holiday week, here are, quite simply, a few of the things that inspire me:- people who serve others - the limitless affection of our pets - the beauty of a California sunset - lovingly maintained craft-traditions - those who heal and encourage us - well-printed books - the smell of citrus-blossoms - the sound of children on a playground - a well-reasoned opinion - poet's who say it just-exactly-right - chocolate ice-cream with caramel topping - the glory of our state and national parks - a merry-go-round--anywhere - artists who create out of love of the thing itself - the crispness of an autumn afternoon - Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, Prelude - those who take a stand - the perennial philosophy - a rainy day - dancers who put it all on the line - noble buildings - people with worthy aspirations - musicians who sing and play with their hearts - the nature of my own soul
I could go on. And on. But that would limit your imagination. Take the time to be aware of those people and things around you that urge you toward authentic action. On Sunday, June 17th we had a surprise signing of Rev. Marian Moon's collected essays, Lessons of Truth. We say "surprise" because Rev. Moon didn't know anything about it! It was
our great pleasure to publish some of the recent essays that Rev. Moon had written and honor her with this publication. What a joyful event.

Sunday June 24th was the last Sunday that Mr. Cooper Neal served in his official capacity of Church Administrator. He is retiring from that position but will not be leaving. After all these years, he's simply letting someone else "do the heavy lifting." It was a thrilling and important day at CSL-LA. The feeling of love and family was overwhelming. Special music from JoAnne Worley, Kelly Britt, John Randall and soul-food from Bunny Hull made it exhilarating. A fantastic reception for Mr. Neal was created by the extraordinary Debra Swihart with loving help from Tricia Klink, Sheila Hughes, James Robinson, Bennie Harris, Gary Bond, Frank Fischer, Mark Mallery, Edward Brown, Becky Kemmerer. Tech support from Bob Zwolinski and Jesus Reyes and Welcome staff Wendy Werris, Joe Price and Frank Fischer. We are so proud of our Center family and we know Mr. Neal appreciated it mightily.
We did NOT call each other to coordinate outfits--really.

Both JoAnne Worley and Kelly Britt have played "Mama Rose" in productions of "Gypsy." They were our very special musical guests and in tribute to Mr. Neal, sang "Some People" (Joanne), "You'll Never Get Away From Me" (Kelly) and made a duet out of "You Gotta Have a Gimmick." Some serious fun.
Thank you Cooper for your support and hard work that has made our Center the success that is it. We love you!

Local PBS journalist Huell Howser was in attendance one Sunday when John talked about the jacaranda trees that he loves so much. It inspired Mr. Howser to feature these unique, beautiful trees in a special episode of his series "California's Gold." Video Worth Watching
Maurice Sendak recently passed at the age of 82. In his obituary, the New York Times wrote that Sendak was " widely considered the most important children's book artist of the 20th century." This video clop is touching and articulate. It is from "Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak", a docu- mentary by Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs.

Spiritual Mind Treatment
I GIVE THANKS FOR MY FREEDOM

There is One Power in the Universe, flowing through all life. It creates ALL things our of Itself. Therefore, ALL are created to be free. In this TRUTH, the abundant activity of Spirit is always available to express in, as, and through Me.
I honor the thirst for freedom within Me this very moment. Today, I celebrate My impulse to think, express, create, and love freely. I revel in the strength and courage of My independence. The only bondage is that which I initiate in My own thoughts through a consciousness of lack, limitation, or fear. The thing that binds Me is the thing that frees Me, and this thing is My attitude. I NOW consciously choose to set Myself free of any such limits. My Spiritual Truth frees Me to a renewed and expanded experience of My Divine possibilities.
I am aware of the Presence of God, of Freedom, and I soar in My unlimited potential. I NOW give thanks for this magnificent gift of FREEDOM.
I NOW know and accept this Truth and Freedom is Mine to experience, here and now. And So It Is.

From The Perennial Philosophy
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."
Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 - May 6, 1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience," an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.

YOU ARE ENOUGH

The great Dr. David Walker published his book "You Are Enough" in 2007. We decided it would a fun to make this class a tuition-free offering. Because we prefer smaller groups, it will be offered in two sections: one section will run four Tuesday evenings and the other section will run four Saturday mornings. The book is for sale at the book table or at class--otherwise, there is no charge for this class. If you've never taken classes this would be a great time to join in.
~~~~~ In August, we will offer a class based on the book THE DEATH OF THE MYTHIC GOD. In this class we will briefly study an idea called "spiral dynamics" as well as explore how our notions of God evolve over time, becoming more adult and less literal. If you enjoyed our class on myth and Joseph Campbell, this is the kind of experience you will enjoy as well.

Lessons Of Truth
LETTING GO
Rev. Marian G. Moon
Many cling to old memory and behavior patterns that interfere with their peace of mind. If we are reluctant in letting go of past hurts, misunderstandings and painful memories we live as though these were a part of who we are. These memories and beliefs become the barnacles that build up in the sub- conscious. We may know these interfere with our happiness yet not realize we can let them go.
Unless we understand that we are greater than our experiences we assume that these are part of our make up--something we cannot change. This belief holds us in bondage to the past.
Dr. Raymond Charles Barker wrote: "Old hurts and old rejections arrive at the threshold of consciousness in order to get out." It is time to release them and move on. If we would stop reviewing and rehearsing these we could do that and experience greater freedom. This is an opportunity to see the experience for what it is -- one that is finished and over and then be willing to let it go.
We decide to continue in the old pattern or move on. It no longer has power over us unless we give it a place in our consciousness.
Affirm: I choose to let go of old memory patterns and live in the "now."

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...
Drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence is at once the nation's most cherished symbol of liberty and Jefferson's most enduring monument. Here, in exalted and unforgettable phrases, Jefferson expressed the convictions in the minds and hearts of the American people. The political philosophy of the Declaration was not new; its ideals of individual liberty had already been expressed by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. What Jefferson did was to summarize this philosophy in "self-evident truths" and set forth a list of grievances against the King in order to justify before the world the breaking of ties between the colonies and the mother country
